Solutions to Poor Print Bed Adhesion

2026-03-12

1. Check Your Filament Material

Different filaments have distinct requirements for heated bed temperature and adhesion. For unfamiliar materials, use the recommended parameters provided by the manufacturer.

2. General First Layer Settings (All Materials)

  • Keep the first-layer speed between 30–45 mm/s
  • Turn off the part cooling fan for the first layer
A well-bonded first layer is critical for print success; slower speed and retained heat greatly improve adhesion.

3. Heated Bed Temperature

A heated bed is required for most materials except PLA. Proper temperature ensures better bonding and less warping.
Recommended temperatures:
  • PLA: 55–60°C
  • ABS: 90–100°C
  • ASA: 95–110°C
  • PETG: 70–80°C
  • TPU: 25–60°C
  • Nylon (PA): 100–115°C
Excessively high temperature causes elephant foot bulging; low temperature leads to weak adhesion.

4. Proper Z‑Axis Calibration

A nozzle too far from the bed is a common cause of poor adhesion.
  • Home the print head
  • Check the gap with a sheet of printer paper
  • Ideal gap: slight resistance when sliding the paper
For auto-leveling printers, slightly lower the first-layer height; use default layer heights for subsequent layers based on nozzle size.

5. Keep the Print Bed Clean

Oil, fingerprints, and leftover plastic severely reduce adhesion.
  • PEI sheets: Wipe with isopropyl alcohol (do NOT use acetone)
  • Glass beds: Clean with isopropyl alcohol or acetone
  • Cleaning schedule: PEI every 5–10 prints; glass once per month

6. PEI Bed Tips

  • Bonds strongly when heated, releases easily when cool
  • No adhesive needed for standard prints
  • Clean frequently
  • Avoid scratching the surface with the nozzle
  • Acetone will damage PEI
  • For difficult materials, apply a small amount of adhesive to boost grip

7. Use a Brim for Extra Stability

Ideal for: ABS, ASA, nylon, large prints, and warping-prone parts
Setting: 10–30 loops
A raft is generally not recommended unless printing very small parts.
