Analysis of Stringing Issues in 3D Printing Filaments

The essence of stringing in 3D printing is oozing of filament from the nozzle during print head travel. The core influencing factors include retraction parameters, printer configuration, filament properties, and filament moisture absorption. The optimization strategies are as follows:

1. Retraction Parameters: Core Measure for Stringing Prevention

The greater the distance between the extruder and the hotend, the higher the required retraction distance and speed. For Bowden extruder systems, significantly increased retraction is necessary; for direct-drive extruders, moderate adjustment is sufficient; for near-range extruder setups such as Hemera, minimal retraction is adequate. Excessive retraction tends to cause under-extrusion, while insufficient retraction results in nozzle oozing, requiring precise adjustment based on the printer type.

2. Travel Speed: Auxiliary Measure to Reduce Stringing

During non-printing travel of the print head, the shorter the dwell time, the less filament oozing occurs. Travel speed can be increased within the load capacity of the printer. Different printer configurations are compatible with different speed ranges: Cartesian/i3 printers allow moderate speed increments, CoreXY printers enable further speed enhancement, and printers with vibration compensation (such as Bambu Lab models) support significant speed increases. Reduce the speed if jitter or stepper motor loss of steps occurs.

3. Filament Properties: Stringing Tendency Varies by Filament Type

The stringing tendency from lowest to highest is: PLA < ABS/ASA < TPU/Foam TPU < PETG. For PLA filaments, proper parameter adjustment can completely eliminate stringing; for PETG filaments, slight stringing is inevitable and can be removed through post-processing; for flexible filaments such as TPU, stringing (filament dragging) is prone to occur, which can be mitigated by reducing print speed and matching appropriate retraction parameters.

4. Filament Moisture Absorption: An Easily Overlooked Inducing Factor

If a "crackling" sound is heard during extrusion, the printed surface is rough, and stringing persists despite correct parameters, the filament is likely moisture-absorbed. PLA filaments require low-temperature drying for an appropriate duration; filaments such as PETG and TPU need high-temperature drying for an extended period; long-term storage should be in a filament dryer and airtight container to prevent moisture absorption at the source.

General Principles for Stringing Prevention Adjustment

For Bowden extruder systems, properly increase retraction; for direct-drive extruders, make moderate adjustments. Increase travel speed and acceleration according to the printer's stability, combined with slight Z-axis lift, to effectively reduce stringing.
