[Filament]Filament on 3d printer of my experience

Hi, guys!
Today I will share you my experience of the PLA filament on 3d printer.
About the filament type, you can refer to this link at first:

We will write 5 part to introduce the PLA/ABS/PETG/TPU/PVA filament

Part 1: PLA
We suggest you choose the PLA at first if you are a newcomer.
It is easy to print and even you don't need to add a heatbed for it.

But it also has its shortcoming :
1. The cooling cycle is about 30s
It means if you print some object without cooling duct fan.
You may get some bad result: Bent, filament drop, etc.
Add a cooling duct fan can improve it and you can get a better result.

2.Anti-oxidation not good
When you got a roll of the filament. It usually saved by vacuum packaging.
If you open it and don't use it. About a few days later, you will find it become brittle.
At the meantime: You can't use it for print again because it will be clogged at the half of the hotend.

3. The PLA will become soft if the extruder overheating
Pls check your extruder motor at first. You need to check the temperature of the extruder motor is under 50C.
If the motor overheating then it will make the PLA become soft and it will cause PLA clogged at the half of
the PTFE(The printing usually enabled the retract setting, this is another reason)
My suggestion is:
If it allows, you can add a cooling fan for the extruder motor.

Part 2: ABS
ABS is a very common plastic. Its application is very extensive.
Even the plastic part of your computer case uses this material.

As this wiki mentioned about:
The most important mechanical properties of ABS are impact resistance and toughness
While PLA is weak in these 2 part.

Something you need to care about ABS filament 3d printer:
1. The temperature of the ABS filament recommend is 230~270C
2. When your 3d printer prints the ABS, pls check your door is open or the window is open.
ABS will produce toxic gases during the melting process(Most of them). It means you need to keep good ventilation.
3.ABS filament required the high heatbed temp(90~110C)
If your 3d printer heatbed can't up to 90C then it will cause your printing failed(Bent or the filament doesn't stick to the heatbed)
You need to know the PLA filament even doesn't need the heatbed.
I suggest you put the printer in a thermostat box and the printer is in the closed environment.

Part 3: PETG
You may not have heard of this material in the early 3D printing.
But this year: 2019, we can easily find hundreds of sellers on Amazon selling this type filament.

PETG combines the advantages of PLA and ABS filament. That's why the player like it.
PETG has good light transmission, which means that the surface of your printed items is near the translucent state.
The most important point is: PETG is very environmentally friendly. Its combustion products are CO2 and H2O

When you print PETG, pls pay attention to cleaning the nozzle before printing begins. According to my personal experience, if your nozzle is not designed properly, PETG will easily remain around the nozzle. And if you don't care about it: you find some black points in the middle of your print.

Part 4: TPU
TPU is a very soft material.
Your phone case,shoes may use this material.

Now, you can use the 3d printer to print a pair of shoes in your real life.
Don't trust me?

It is an interesting type filament, right?

But here are something you need to care about it:
1.TPU filament is very soft. It is a big advantage for itself but not on your 3d printer.
Especially the long-distance hotend with the PTFE tube.
I suggest you change the default feeder to which can adjust the spring strength.
Too strength spring will cause your TPU filament clogged at the feeder.
So you need to set it at a suitable range.

2.TPU filament print speed is lower than the normal filament.
The print speed of it is under 30mm/s. You can try to increase the speed of it.
What will happen? If I were you. I won't want to try to do it.

Also, this is the important point: If it allows, disable the retract setting because it will help to decrease the filament clogged percentage.

Part 5: PVA
PVA filament usually used for the 3d printer print the support parts.

The price of PVA filament is generally expensive, so you need to think about how to use it more efficiently.
Some slicer software can help you reduce the PVA filament waste.
For example:
Most of the support use the main print filament. But the connection area of the object and supports use the PVA filament.
It means choosing the correct slice software is also important.

Since when have the printer (it will soon be two years) I use only ABS, why?

But for me it's the best material that's available. :D

Thanks to its properties it is perfectly machinable. You can successfully drill holes in it, grind it with a file, polish it with sandpaper, cut it with a saw or knife.

And most importantly, it can be glued very easily and permanently using acetone.

When you have a good quality ABS filament, you can also use acetone to give a beautiful glossy look to the surface. Just spread a small amount of acetone on the surface of the model.
In this way you can renew the surface that was sanded.

I don't know any better material for a DIY guy.

I just got a 3D printer for Christmas, and I got two different filaments with it. One is a blue by hatchbox, which I have had a lot of adhering issues with prints. I have to print on a raft to get consistent results. It drives me nuts because I am wasting filament and large prints add hours. I switched over to the marble PLA and it works like a charm. I have a two year old at home so I am looking to build an enclosure for it, but want to use red for all the pieces. The question I had was, do the other PLA by Eryone adhere as well as the marble? I have found a range of temps work for marble and I don't want to waste a bunch of it trying to find the sweet spot. Just wanted to check here to see how others like the PLA other than the marble(which for what I am doing is awesome) but I don't want to have to paint all the pieces.

I have the same issue with PLA blue filement eryone and a waste a lot of prints. I mesured the diameter of filement and found 1.90 mm. I adjusted flow in cura 75% instead 100% it works but not perfectly. with other filement 1.75 mm it works fine.

What is the diam of your blue filement.

Hi William,
Thanks for this post - all knowledge and experience on material choices is gratefully received - especially for newcomers to this hobby.

I'd like to add that I am only two months into 3D printing, but I am so pleased that I decided to choose ERYONE for my first filament purchases. So far, I've tried the ones below and they have all been excellent.
  • Orange
  • Silk Copper
  • Dark Wood
  • Marble
I tried the Orange first, and was absolutely delighted with the high resolution and detail of the finish. Since then I've also been delighted with the Copper and the Marble, with the latter being my personal favourite. The Dark Wood is fine for quality of prints, but is a bit dull and uninteresting from an aesthetic perspective (personal choices!). My settings are 200C/60C with a print speed of 50mm/s. I tried printing a temperature tower from 180C to 220C and every temperature worked fine - 20mm bridges intact at all temperatures.

The only other filament I've tried has been the Colorfabb NGEN since I had heard good reports. It comes out pretty well, but it's not as good as the ERYONE PLA for detail. The fused filament tends to 'spread' a little with the result that 'Print-In-Place' objects have a tendency to fuse together.

The next filament I want to try is a TPU - so I think I will try the ERYONE TPU - can anyone tell me the Shore A hardness rating of this material??

For information, my printer is a direct drive Artillery Genius (which I recommend to anyone).
